Ladies Bowls Notes
A big thankyou to the ladies who donated white bowls clothes for use by medical staff in New Guinea.
An impromptu 90th birthday party was held for Essie Wood on November 8. Bowls having been cancelled, it was a great chance for friends and bowling mates to get together.
Gwen Davies, Fay Iddles, Karen Hayes, Carol Hannabury, Val Hardy and Annette Phayre were chosen to play in the GB Region teams event against Ballarat. The aggregate shield was won by the GBA.
The first day of the BV state fours event was managed by our Club. Forty-eight players enjoyed our greens and hospitality.
Our Ladies' Invitation Classic 4's enjoyed good weather, good bowling and good food with 28 teams playing. The winners and runners-up teams were from Ocean Grove. A big thankyou to all involved with the organisation and running of this event.
Hilary Foran
Vale: Frank Salter
Our club was saddened by the recent passing of our friend and long standing member Frank Salter.
Frank commenced bowling with the club in 1998 and played 206 pennant games.
Our sincere sympathies are extended to Jean and family.
Synthetic Coaching Morning
On Friday 2nd December a special coaching morning was held to improve our knowledge and technique when playing on synthetic surfaces. As many clubs now have this type of surface anything learned is valuable. Thankyou Peter Cornell for arranging the coaching, also Joy Davies who ran the specialised coaching session and the Highton Bowls Club who allowed us to use their synthetic green. The session was well attended and should prove very worthwhile. Well done Peter for this initiative.
November/December Sponsors
We wish to acknowledge and thank the following organisations who have provided financial support for our events during November and December.
Cirillo Architects, Len Camm Mini Bins, What’s for Dinner, Carpet House, Highton Amcal Pharmacy, Buxton Real Estate, Our Corner Pharmacy, Tuckers Funerals, Kattwinkle Meats, Jetset Belmont.
Indoor Bowls
The Monday afternoon social indoor bowls contiues to be well attended each week.
A points aggregate event was held over 8 weeks during October and November and proved very popular. The event was won by Roma Julien with 29 points. Ofelia Delgallo was runner-up with 28 points and Judith Bracewell third with 26 points. We thank Ossie Nelson for the 2 $10 vouchers from Chook and Hook he passed on to us.
The annual Christmas bowls and afternoon tea is scheduled for Monday December 12th.
A short recess over the Christmas-New Year period will be taken and Bowling will recommence on Monday January 9th.
Believe It or Not
On Tuesday 8th November our green staff emptied the rain gauge to determine how much rain had fallen to judge what green preparation was needed. It was read that 9 mil had been received. That same morning Ron (Snowy) Stephens excitedly came into the club advising that just some short distance away at his residence he had received 62 mil of rain, as he had just checked his gauge. The B.O.M. across the State showed a maximum of 12 mil in the Otways.
There must be a special rain cloud hanging over his home. Maybe that could explain why his lawns are always greener than anyone else in the neighbourhood in the middle of summer.
Are there any other explanations to the cloud burst at his home on that day?????
Games Milestones.
Men:
Ossie Nelson, Graham Clyne 200 games
Eric Carbines 300 games
Cyril Short 400 games
Congratulations and well done on these milestones.
A woman goes to the doctor, beaten black and blue. The doctor asks, "What happened?"
The woman says, "Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every time my husband comes home drunk he beats me to a pulp."
The doctor says, "I have a real good cure for that. When your husband comes home drunk, just take a glass of sweet tea and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don't swallow until he goes to bed and is asleep."
Two weeks later, the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. The woman says, "Doctor, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband came home drunk, I swished with sweet tea. I swished and swished, and he didn't touch me! How does the tea do that?"
The doctor says: "The tea does nothing at all, it's keeping your mouth shut that does the trick..."
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year to all.
